The Islamic Society Committee elections will be held according to the following timeline:

Nominations Period
Wednesday 4th April 10:00 AM – Tuesday 10th April 5:00 PM

Elections Period
Monday 16th april 1:00 PM – Friday 20th April 3:00 PM

- Ballots will be available in BOTH prayer halls | Daily Monday to Thursday 1:00 PM – 3:00 PM, Friday 12:00 PM – 3:00 PM
- Ballots will also be held at the elections hustings | Meeting Room 8 SU, Wednesday 18th April 3:00 PM – 5:00 PM

The Islamic Society committee structure is as following:

What does each position entail?

Executive committee positions general mandate: The executive committee shall meet to only discuss matters related to the planning of strategic affairs of the society and any other matters within the mandate of their prescribed roles.

President
The President shall be the chief executive officer of the Society and is the Chairperson of the Board. The President is the spokesperson, representative and correspondent for the Society in external activities. – Upholds the right to make a decision without consulting the board of directors if an immediate decision is required and board of directors is not present.

Vice President – Brothers
The role of the Brother Vice President is to support the president in their duty and take overall responsibility for the affairs of the male members and directors of the Society. He shall also perform all the duties of the President (along side the Sister Vice President) in the absence of the President.

Vice President – Sisters
The role of the Sister Vice President is to support the president in their duty and take overall responsibility for the affairs of the female members and directors of the Society. She shall also perform all the duties of the President (along side the Brother Vice President) in the absence of the President.

Vice President – Student Affairs:
The Vice President Student Affairs deals with all political engagement within the Student Union and the University. The Vice President Student Affairs shall advise the Board of Directors on Union policies and activities as well as liaison with the Union Executive and staff with relation to any work affecting the Society and Muslim Students.

General Secretary
The Secretary takes and publishes minutes from meetings, sends the weekly ISOC email, gives notices for meetings and takes care of documents and registers related to the work of the Society. The role also includes overlooking internal dynamics of the team and communication within the committee and with the membership.

Treasurer
The Treasurer shall have the care and custody of all the funds and securities of the Society, allocate funds for projects and keep or cause to be kept the requisite books of account and accounting records. The treasurer can approve or disapprove expenses, and looks into expanding funding of the society.

Committee Officers – 7 brothers and 7 sisters
If elected into this position you will sit on the society’s committee and help in running the society. In addition you will be allocated by the executive committee into one or more projects, such as Charity Week, Islam Awareness Week, Prayer hall management, socials, education, dawah, welfare or any particular project/campaign you and the executive committee agree upon. All committee members are expected to support one another in their roles and work collectively as a team in running the society and the running projects.

Eligibility for each position:

All positions: Every director and officer shall be eighteen or more years of age and shall be a member in good standing of the Society for at least six months. Furthermore, the member must agree to uphold the Society’s Constitution and adhere to Islamic Practices.

President: The President of the Society must have been a previous director within the last two academic years and a member in good standing of the Society for at least nine months.

Vice-President Brothers: Male only position
Vice-President Sisters: Female only position
Vice-President Student Affairs: No particular restrictions apply
General Secretary: No particular restrictions apply
Treasurer: No particular restrictions apply

Committee officers – Brothers: Male only positions
Committee officers – Sisters: Female only positions

** Important: Can you run for more than one position?
No candidate can run for two different positions on the Board of Directors.
However, they may run for one position on the Board of Directors and one position on the Committee of Officers.

Executive Committee Positions:
- Candidates will run against each other and against RON (Re-Open Nominations)
- Each member will have 1 vote per position.

Committee Officers Positions:
- Each member will be given 4 votes (no preference). Each vote will count as one point for the chosen candidate/candidates.
- Male members can only vote for male candidates, and female members can only vote for female candidates.

Voting
Ballots will be available in BOTH prayer halls during the Elections Period, Daily Monday to Thursday 1:00 PM – 3:00 PM, Friday 12:00 PM – 3:00 PM. Ballots will also be held at the elections hustings at the Council Chambers SU, Thursday 5th May 3:00 PM – 6:00 PM

Annual Quran Competition

Regular recitation of the Qur’an comes with ample opportunity to mount the scales of reward. The virtues attached to reciting the Qur’an are undeniably countless.

*Attention! The date for the Qur’an competition has changed[due to clash with Jumu'ah prayers]. It will take place on the 23rd of April and NOT the 20th of April.

The two winners of each section (1 brother and 1 sister) will be awarded. As there are four sections, 8 participants (4 brothers and 4 sisters) will be awarded in total. Prizes cannot be confirmed yet.

Ultimately, by taking the first step on the journey with the Qur’an, you’re already a winner The prize of storing the Qur’an in our hearts is one of which is beyond the parameters of everything within the universe! The Ultimate prize is that which Allah will grant you insha’Allah.

The Qur’an is the sacred text of Islam, which Muslims believe to be the word of God revealed to the final messenger – Muhammad (peace and blessings be upon him). It is the main source of guidance for Muslims around the world and is regarded as the finest piece of literature in the Arabic language.

The University of Manchester Islamic Society in collaboration with likeMEDIA.tv invites you to retrace those precious moments in history when the Qur’an was being revealed directly to the Prophet Muhammad (peace and blessings be upon him) as a divine manual that would forever change the world. A 60‐ 90min presentation (no breaks) incorporating spoken word poetry from Boonaa Mohammed, infused with live Qur’an recitation with Qari Uthman Qasim and translation with multi‐ media accompaniment – a great way to introduce the early story of Islam in a fun and creative manner.

How much have you achieved, seen, lost and felt in the last ten years? Time ultimately changes us all but for the 171 men still in Guantanamo, their friends and families, time has stood still. Guantanamo Bay is the world’s most notorious prison and has attracted the condemnation of human rights campaigners since the first detainees arrived. Opened 10 years ago following the conflict in Afghanistan, and despite Barrack Obama promising Guantanamo’s closure in 2009, it still remains open and can house suspects without charge.

The Islamic Society have invited James Yee (former US army chaplain at Guantanamo) to discuss his experiences. Join the discussion and hear firsthand experience of the goings on behind the wire.

A HUGE HUGE THANK YOU to everyone from The Islamic Society who took part in the EID presents for charity! The gifts were delivered today to Royal Manchester Children’s Hospital and the rest was taken to Francis House.

I cannot tell you how HAPPY the CHILDREN were and how their faces LIGHTENED up. I wish you all were there to see it yourselves. Nearly all the presents were given to SPECIAL NEEDS CHILDREN who have just come off intensive unit.

Don’t worry if you missed the chance to take part we shall be doing this again during CHARITY WEEK insh’Allah.

So many presents were generously brought in and this could not have happened without the help of you all.
